Remember those tide pools I was talking about? These ones were up higher so we were able to access them without having to snorkel. In Mexico, one of my favorite things to do since I was a little girl was to venture back down to the beach at low tide and peek at all the critters that had been covered by the ocean hours before. The reef here was composed of an opaque volcanic rock, which revealed crabs and fish amongst other sea creatures scurrying away as soon as they saw your shadow or felt the weight of your footstep. From there, you can see the lighthouse in the background, which is party of the Makapu’u Point Trail that Todd and I hiked.
This chiffon dress from Shabby Apple was light and breezy, which made it ideal for exploring. These combat boots weren’t well-equipped for wandering on top of slippery, porous rocks due to their rubber soles, though. And I was careful to avoid getting the leather wet when the waves crashed up the sides, but one caught me off guard and splashed me when my back was turned. But luckily, they were fine. 🙂

One of our favorite beaches to go to while in Hawaii was Makapu’u Beach. It has gorgeous white sand, black lava rocks and little tide pools which are perfect for snorkeling. It also offers stunning views of Makapu’u Point, which Todd and I hiked at sunset, and its lighthouse. While the beach is small and secluded, it’s known for its rip currents and powerful shore breaks so it was great for body surfing or boogie boarding. In fact, most of the people that were there were locals. The first day was overcast and cloudy, and as we were walking down to the beach it began to rain! But we were determined to make the most out of it and later all agreed that swimming in the ocean while it was raining was one of the highlights of our trip! That same day while we were waiting for the right wave to come, out pops a seal a couple yards away. It was so close to some of the riders they could have reached out and touched it. Everyone was in awe watching it bob up and down, in and out of the ocean.
The tropical print of this swimsuit could not have been more fitting for the location! I love the retro cut, and the high-waisted bottoms with ruched sides are so flattering! Plus, its style name is “Hot & Gold” which I took as a nod to Katy Perry’s song, “Hot N Cold” and her limitless supply of vintage bikinis. Anything Katy, I’m sold.
Dole Whip with freshly sliced pineapples: tasted like literal heaven, if that were a flavor.
I had to take a picture inside THE pineapple, I mean c’mon! Apparently I looked like part of the attraction because Asian tourists were coming up and taking my picture and copying my poses afterward so… 😉

The only thing gloomy about visiting the Dole Plantation was the sky! We went during the middle of the week so we practically had the whole place to ourselves. First we took a ride on the Pineapple Express, which took you on a tour-by-train through the gigantic plantation of never-ending fields of pineapples, sugar cane stalks, and banana, lychee, and cacao trees. We strolled through the plantation garden and found gorgeous hibiscus flowers with blooms as big as your head, and a beautiful Mindanou Gum tree with a rainbow tree trunk. It was so cute and colorful I just had to give it a hug! I also wanted to test my navigational skills out in the Pineapple Garden Maze, which happens to be the largest maze in the world mind you! But my husband and our friends weren’t feeling as adventurous and didn’t want to spend hours lost in a maze! To each his own. But let’s not pretend that my favorite part wasn’t the freshly made Dole Whips though. They were so heavenly my tastebuds are still singing praises.
This outfit was destined for wandering around in perfect weather and heading straight to the beach after. My strappy embellished starfish sandals by Miu Miu are a mermaid’s dream and oh so near and dear to my heart. So much so in fact, that I kept them as near to my heart as possible on the plane to Hawaii. They were in my carry-on because I would have been heartbroken if something happened to them. Ain’t nobody got time for that! This crochet skater skirt looks like it was practically made to be paired with this flowy, buttery soft tank! Unfortunately, both of them are sold out now but I linked a bunch of Wildfox tops & some similar skirts below!

One of the highlights of my vacation to Hawaii was hiking the scenic Maunawili Falls in Hawaii. Traipsing through a lush, tropical jungle surrounded by enormous trees with roots jutting up through the earth and vines riddled up their trunks was completely new territory for a girl born and raised in the desert like me. I’ve never seen so much green in my life, and the rich, deep shade of green Hawaii boasts makes Arizona’s pale in comparison.
The cherry on top was being greeted by a picturesque waterfall and swimming hole at the end of our hike! My husband cliff jumped from the top of the waterfall, and I watched happily from the sidelines. (Long story but I refuse to cliff jump anymore due to an accident I had in the past.) I also wore this bikini to one of our favorite beaches, probably because it was the most secluded. We body surfed (RIP sunglasses! 🙁 ) until we spotted some Man O’ War’s floating around us and then took a little cat nap on the sand. Best. Day. Ever!
Blouse: Chloe Oliver (℅) | Shorts: J Brand (similar) | Sunnies: Free People | Bag: From a Swap Meet in Hawaii | Sandals: Sam Edelman | Necklace: Michael Kors (similar) | Lippie: MAC “Cream Cup” + Liner: MAC “Boldly Bare” + Lipgloss: NARS “Turkish Delight” | Nails: China Glaze “Sun of a Peach” + China Glaze “Grass is Lime Greener“
This is the second installment of my Chloe Oliver collaboration! I’m all about the 70’s vibes, give me all the crochet, fringe, tassels, suede, velvet and I’m one happy girl! I went with the easy-breezy vibe and paired it with my favorite cut-off shorts from the one and only, J Brand, and the best gladiator sandals I’ve ever owned. Also, these sunnies from Free People are most definitely going to be on repeat all summer. They were only $20, but look much more expensive, a quality I can’t get enough of! I’m really into lime green right now, which is why I picked this color for my nails. I never thought I could pull off yellow or green on my nails because I have fair skin, but since I was going to Hawaii, I decided to venture out from my vacation go-to’s of hot pink and turquoise, and opted for this bright, neon green! Which is why I picked out this bag out of all the other patterns at the swap meet in Hawaii, because it had a lime green fabric woven in! Also, I have a major crush on orange and the two paired together look like tropical heaven. I got this color on my nails a couple years ago and found it in the gel form so it was a sign. I go back and forth with gel nails. I get them about once a year and love them for two weeks and then hate what they do to my nails after! But in my opinion, they are so worth the damage they cause later.
P.S. All of our blog followers get 25% off their order at Chloe Oliver with the code “CO*Desertmermaids” until the end of May so hurry and before the month ends! I’m currently crushing on this blouse and these shorts!
